The Scarlets

On Wednesday March 17th. the Quins take on Llanelli at Parc Y Scarlets. (Kick off 7.15pm.)

Llanelli RFC was formed in 1872 but it was not until 1884 that they took to the field, Stradey Park, in their iconic coloured shirts and from then on became known to the world as “The Scarlets”. One would feel that it is fortunate for them that they changed from their earlier rose and primrose stripes.

Llanelli have played all the major touring sides at Stradey Park and have a fine record against them as they have beaten all on some occasion except for “The Springboks”. Great fixtures and fine victories create a glorious history and with that become associated giants of Welsh Rugby. And so it is that Llanelli can boast amongst its famous alumni the likes of Lewis Jones, Barry John, Phil Bennett, Ray Gravell, Carwyn James, JJ Williams, Ieuan Evans, Jonathan Davies, Scott and Derek Quinnell to name just a few of their 180 capped internationals.

Some of the famous players who have played for both sides include Ieuan Evans, Jonathan Griffiths, Stephen Jones and Percy Lloyd, Steve Wake, Ben Grace and Euros Evans.

Llanelli’s Recent Roll of Honour.

WRU League Champions – 1998/99, 2001/02

Beat The All Blacks 9-3 in 1972.

Carmarthen Quins have beaten Llanelli 17-10 in 2003/04 and 13-8 in 2004/05 but lost twice the following year when Llanelli were coached by Max Howells. This year the Quins lost narrowly 10-18 on the Park but hope to reverse that result this week.
