After gaining a well deserved win at Llangennech the Quins move into second spot in the League behind unbeaten Tonmawr. This was the first win at Llangennech since September 1983 and then it was the same score line.
Early Quins pressure allowed Craig Jones the opportunity to convert a 30m. penalty. Good playing conditions meant that both sides then had chances to use the ball and play was end to end.
With Carmarthen on the defensive in their own “22”, a weak clearance kick was gathered by Mark Jacobs who started a run from the right touch line. He then linked with his backs and slick passing created an overlap for wing, Andrew Rees, so that he could score in the left corner. Andrew Thomas added the conversion.
This set back spurred the visitors to use their backs. Craig Jones put in a 40m. kick deep into Llangennech territory with Josh Freeman closely backing up but he was collared by the opposition full back and only a penalty, which was narrowly missed, resulted.
Jones continued to use his boot to keep play in the home half and from this pressure Dan Hawkins was able to release his backs, quick ball resulted from a ruck and a further two passes gave skipper, Alan Mason, a chance to break through and score under the posts. Craig Jones restored the Carmarthen lead with the conversion but then missed with a penalty from half way and a drop goal attempt.
From a line out near the home side’s line Arwel Davies gained clean possession and from this controlled situation Dan Hawkins combined with his brother, David, who used his strength to complete a well-taken try. Craig Jones converted to give the Quins a 17-7 half time lead.
The Quins carried on from the first half so that Llangennech were unable to break the stranglehold and only their desperate defence managed to keep the visitors out. Paul Arnold and Arwel Davies were in commanding form at the line out and the set piece was solid giving the home side little chance to attack. It took Llangennech 25 min. to get into the Carmarthen “22” and then only to find the Quins defence on top of their game so that no danger resulted.
The Quins were guilty of making wrong decisions when a score beckoned and, with bonus points meaning such a lot, will need to be more clinical in the future when in the opposition “22”.
The game was in injury time when a spontaneous reaction to a Llangennech player kicking a player on the ground led to a free for all. The referee, to everyone’s amazement, gave the home side a penalty which was converted by Adrian Thomas to gain a losing bonus point for his side which was not deserved.
